PM Narendra Modi State Visit to Mauritius
PM Modi will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day state visit to Mauritius on Tuesday to attend our Independance day (57th National Day celebrations) as the chief guest. During his visit, India and Mauritius will sign a series of agreements aimed at strengthening economic and security cooperation. (MOUs)
An Indian military contingent, including a warship from the Indian Navy and the Akash Ganga skydiving team from the Indian Air Force, will participate in the celebrations, showcasing India's close ties with Mauritius.
Mauritian Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam expressed his gratitude for PM Modi's visit, highlighting the special privilege of hosting such a distinguished leader despite his busy schedule. Navin Ramgoolam also emphasized that the visit is a testament to the strong relationship between the two countries. The following was a statement in the National assembly.
Key Agreements and Collaborative Efforts
According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are set to be signed during PM Modi's visit. The leaders of both nations will hold extensive talks to discuss bilateral matters.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that a technical agreement will be signed between the Indian Navy and Mauritius to exchange information on white shipping, improving maritime security and awareness in the region. Additionally, agreements will be made to enhance capacity building, bilateral trade, and combat cross-border financial crimes. A memorandum of understanding will also be signed between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and the Mauritius Prime Minister's Office, establishing a framework for maritime zone management and ocean research cooperation.
PM Modi will join Prime Minister Ramgoolam in inaugurating a civil service college and a health center funded by India. Furthermore, India's Enforcement Directorate and the Financial Crime Commission of Mauritius will sign an MoU to combat financial crimes, focusing on money laundering and related issues.
The Indian Prime Minister will meet with political leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Indian-origin community during his visit.
Strong Bilateral Relations
India and Mauritius share a long history of close relations, largely due to the significant Indian-origin population that constitutes nearly 70% of Mauritius' population of 1.2 million. Since 2005, India has been one of Mauritius' largest trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching USD 554 million in 2022-23, a 132% increase over the past 17 years.
In terms of defense and maritime security, India has been a key partner in helping Mauritius enhance its strategic capabilities, including expanding an airstrip and jetty on Agalega Island. This cooperation supports Mauritius' ability to monitor its vast exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
India’s Maritime Cooperation with Mauritius
Mauritius has remained a steadfast partner of India in the Indian Ocean region, collaborating on ocean research, observation, and information management. In 2021, Mauritius reaffirmed its commitment to India by signing a comprehensive economic cooperation and partnership agreement.
PM Modi had previously introduced the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) maritime cooperation doctrine during his first visit to Mauritius in 2015, highlighting the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean region.
PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius underscores India’s enduring partnership with the island nation and its continued efforts to foster security, trade, and development in the region.
